Become a good reading partner Setting expectations for good reading partners in your classroom involves defining what it sounds and looks like.
Model, think aloud, and confer with small groups regularly to help instill this practice with your young learners. We do spend a lot of time in September going over how to write in our journals though. Here is something new I am trying this year and I just love it--a writing portfolio.

Also, I also think if I focus on handwriting in their writing station, I can work them up to great creative writing in the near future. The one thing that I do now because of this book is a "Quiet 10" time. This is where the writing activities from today came from.

By opening up my Fridays, I can make up missed literacy days easily (we had like 11 snow days last year so I really needed it) and when I am able to get all of my Daily 5 stations in Monday-Thursday, Friday’s are used for small group intervention, whole group literacy art activities, whole group science activities and experiments or poetry work.

Honestly, it is the choice that makes me the most nervous and is the one that is most constantly changing. I love using Daily 5 in the classroom, but my students need activities that are purposeful and engaging.
